Got a Mountain Bike and not sure what it does come to voyager park tomorrow (May 7th) at 6:30 PM for some informal coaching. Learn about your gears ,breaking and basic riding skills.
I started Mountain Biking after I retired from Police and military service in 1990 after developing knee problems from hockey and running. Over the years my cycling included Road Riding and Cyclocross.
I have a community coaching course designation, Race organizer qualification, Past president and Race team coordinator at united cycle and am the President of The Devon Bicycle association. Mountain bike trail riding and downhill trails are my favorite times on the bike.
Cycling has given me new goals and life experience. I have made new friends all over the country and a new focus on life and family. Cycling is a very inclusive sport where everyone regardless of skills accepts you as a friend team member and encourages your skills and progress.

Have you ever wondered why there is a groomed path at Voyageur Park until February every year? Devon Bicycle Association grooms a 3-4 km race course by snowshoeing and pulling a weighted contraption we affectionately call J POW. This essentially sets a wide packed trail. We start as soon as there is a base of snow until race day. The course is groomed specifically for fat bike rides. Many town cyclists use this course all winter long for training, and is a site of interest for those renting fat bikes from Shift Happens.
Feb 24th, Devon Bicycle Association hosted the Annual Bike Race with racers from Devon, Edmonton and St.Albert. They rode 4 or 6 loops covering between 13-19km in voyageur park though Secret Park, the Flow Trail, ASG trail and this years feature an “Ice Flows”; riding between ice mounds on the beach of the North Saskatchewan River. Shift Happens also organized a shorter kids race to set out before the main event.
The Devon Bicycle Association would like to thank all of sponsors and supporters; Shift Happens, Town of Devon, Cold Avenger, Dairy Queen, Marcis and Fricken Delight Donuts. We would also like to thank all our volunteers out on race day and for helping build this great course all winter.

Devon revisits the Tour of Alberta
The 2013 Tour of Alberta was the inaugural edition of the Tour of Alberta stage race. The race was only open to teams on the UCI Pro Tour, UCI Profesional Continental and UCI Continental circuits. On Sept 5 2013 Devon Hosted the start of Stage 3 Devon to Red Deer. This was truly an international event with teams and riders from all over the cycling world. UCI pro teams including BMC Raceing Team and Garmin Sharp. International riders Peter Sagan, Cadel Evans and Ryder Hesjedal from the Tour De France attended.
We were able to host this international event as a result of our town's branding inititive “Bike Town”. Event and Business development staff, the Mayor and Town council, The Devon Bicycle Association and all departments of the Town of Devon participated along with all the other host communities to make the Tour of Alberta viable as a yearly event in Alberta.
This year nine members of the Devon Bicycle Association participated in the 2017 Velothon Edmonton a 100 Km ride on the Stage 4 course of the 2017 Tour of Alberta. Team Members Stewart Hutchings (Captain) Trish Holt, Dave Mercer,Tanya Cote, Darrell Penner, Sivia Wood, Ghyslain Brazeau, Ryan Stark and Geoff Bostick all compleated the 100 km course.
The Devon Bicycle Association and the Town of Devon have hosted a number of provincial and Canadian cycle evnts in the past and wish to redevelop the awarness of not only cycling but all the emenities Devon has to offer.
Upcoming events we will host and participate in are the River Fest Sept 15 2017 to open our stage one trail development west of highway 60 and host the Provincial Cyclocross Championships October 15. These are critical in attarcting other events to the Town of Devon and the branding of “Bike Town” owned by Devon will continue do that. We wish to engage and help in any initive that will bring the community the recognition we deserve as a place to raise families.
President of The Devon Bicycle Association

Hi Team a few items we want to bring up with you
We could use help Trail building: Friday 23rd 8am to bring in bridge material into the trails
Saturday 24th 8am bridge building.
Meet up under the bridge bottom of new trails.
This Monday night should be a scheduled trail night.
Group rides: If anyone is interested in leading or sweeping for our mtn bike rides or has any specific rides they want to do for our alternating Mondays let us know.
We have discovered an amazing new phone app called GLIMPSE. Its a GPS tracker that you can live track location and send it by email, or text. A few of our members have tried it out this past week. It was a success for us to meet up on the trails the two times we have used it. If your riding on your own send your location to your contact person they can see live where you are in case of emergency.
We are hoping to use this app on our rides just in case something happens or we get split up. We hope to have at the least our lead and sweep on the ride with this resource. When it comes to safety on group rides we need to communicate our plans for the ride, if smaller groups will split up via speed or ability and make sure we stay together (whether it’s a larger group or a smaller group).

The 2017 MS Ride to END MS season has started. This year we will be stepping up our Devon contributions by offering two events to participate in.
Our regular road challenge June 10-11 is on and our Team "SHIFT HAPPENS in DEVON to END MS" is filling up. We will also be sponsoring the Rider Development series for that ride
Starting 1 April 2017. Starting at 9AM and continuing each Sat. Until June 3. There will be no official ride on 20 May the long weekend.
We have a new team for the MS Mountain Bike ride "We Give a Shift END MS" Sept 9-10 in Hinton. I know many of you need the stimulus of new adventures and I am committed to provide them.
This is an all to familiar disease in Canada and our local area has one of the highest concentration of patients. Each year I see new families affected and the life changes are devastating.
I have committed to END MS and have promise to ride until we find a cure or I can't ride anymore.
So there you have it. All the information is on the MS web site and both teams are registered. If you have joined us in the past please find a way to support our Local team by riding, finding a new team member or volunteering to help others enjoy the ride.
Please contact me for any information you require.

Good Morning DBA!
It's that time of year when we start to wrap things up for the season. Our last official group ride for the 2016 season will be Thursday October 27.
This doesn't mean things are completely over between us though.... we're not going to break up with you all that easily.
During the off-season, we have many members who still get out for fat biking, snow shoeing, stair running, we also have a "trail groomer" that we pull to groom out our Blizzard Bike Race course. These activities are posted in the "https://www.facebook.com/groups/557399374301746/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Do you want to ride" Facebook page. Please note, these activities are not official DBA activities and do not require a membership to participate.

Our FREE club t-shirts are here! Well, they're not quite here, but the final design is here!
I have attached a picture of what our gift to you looks like (the final shirt will be light grey with dark navy sleeves), as well as an available size guide.
We have a medium and an XL available to try on at Shift Happens. Please have your sizes in to me NO LATER than Friday September 16 so we can get these ordered ASAP! If you don't give me a size, by the 16th it will be left up to some pretty shady board members to guess your size.
You can either email me your size, or if you stop into Shift Happens you we'll have a sheet there you can fill in.
Pretty cool free stuff hey? BUT WAIT! That's not all!
We will be hosting a pizza night at Marci's on Saturday September 17th at 6pm for all of our members who contributed volunteer hours to trail building and/or maintenance this year.
We will also be running one last trail building worker-bee day on Saturday September 17th.... so here's your chance to get in some volunteer hours and earn some free pizza! We will have 2 crews: 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm. If you are able to make it please come armed with a good rake if you have one. More details will follow on where to meet on the 17th.

It's here! The best, the most original, the most fun club activity night in Alberta is here! The 2016 edition of the DBA BEAT THE WIENER Night Relay is this Friday July 8th in Voyaguer Park in Devon!
We'll meet in the green space that is just past the parking lot of the bike park. It's not the main green space with the skills park... you'll exit the north end of the bike park parking lot, and it's just past the white sea can on your left.
For those of you who are new to the DBA, the Beat the Wiener relay is exactly what it sounds like! You will begin your lap by placing a wiener on the grill. While you are out on your lap, your teammates can only turn your wiener once.... so you better be fast and beat your wiener before it burns! Before the next rider on your team can place their wiener on the grill and head out on their lap, you must be finished eating your wiener (Note: we have learned in past years that cheese smokies aren't a good idea!) And no, buns are not required :-)
This relay is for mountain, CX, or fat bikes.
Teams will be determined on Friday (we just throw gloves in a pile and draw teams).
BYO-wieners, snacks and drinks.
NO COCKTAIL sized wieners! Wieners must be at least the length of your average sized hot dog bun.
This relay is TOTALLY FREE (we're just here to have fun!). Bring your friends... we do require that all participants are members of the DBA or an ABA affiliated club. Riders without an ABA membership can also choose to sign a waiver of liability under the "one ride" ABA policy. This is a DBA club activity - NOT an ABA race.
All riders must have at least a rear red light. We do recommend having some sort of front white light, but who am I to tell you how to race your race ;-) You can be as creative as you want... a little duct tape and a flashlight always works!
We will meet at 7pm to set up the grill, pre-ride the course, choose teams, and do wiener inspection - we have to make sure all wieners are at least regulation size!
Racing will be from 8-11pm! Our winning team will be determined by who completes the most laps... as long as your last lap is started prior to 11pm, even if your rider heads out at 10:59pm, it will still count!
And as always, friends and family are always welcome to watch and heckle... I mean, cheer on the riders!

As you all know, Devon will be the host venue for the mountain biking events for the 2016 Alberta Summer Games coming up in July.
One of our Bears Program organizers, Zara Wishloff, is the Zone 5 representative for the games, and he's looking for anyone who may be interested in volunteering as the Zone 5 coach or chaperone. If anyone may be interested in either role, please contact Zara at:
The Alberta Summer Games are quite short on volunteers in general for the event, so if any of you may be able to help with set-up, course marshalling etc, please sign up at:
Make sure to select "Sports - Cycle/Mountain as your 1st Committee Pref in the drop down menu.

Trailbuilding begins this Monday May 9th 6:30PM at Voyageur Park.
Devon was selected as the venue for the mountain biking portion of of the Alberta Summer Games (hosted in Leduc). We require an extra 1/2 km of trail to build (which has been approved by the Town of Devon). Bring water, work gloves and dress so you will be ready to use a shovel. This will be a great introduction to trailbuilding other trails we will be getting set to work on this season.
Also, keep May 28th in your schedule for a worker-bee day. It is "Name that trail day" and we hope to collaborate with the town to drop the shovel on some new trail.
You do not need to be a member of the DBA to work alongside us for trailbuilding, however we will require you to sign a waiver.
See you Monday

A few udates
May 2nd is the start to Muddy Mondays. We meet at 6:30pm in front of Marcis. Bring your Mountain Bike and sence of adventure.
Here's your chance to have a say in what we wear!
We would like to have club t-shirts this year, so we've decided to have a design contest!
The only rules to t-shirt design contest, are there are no rules to t-shirt design contest!
Well, ok, maybe there are a couple of rules....
1. The design should be limited to the front of the t-shirt.
2. Designs must be submitted no later than May 15 to email@example.com
3. The contest is open to club members only - so make sure to get your friends to buy their memberships so they can enter the contest
4. Your judges will be your trusted Executive Members of the Board (Stewart Hutchings, Holly Belbin, Darrell Penner, Trish Holt, Michelle Jackson, Pepper Harlton, Denis Poirier, Nancy St-Hilaire)
5. Bribing of judges may or may not be frowned upon.... Holly Belbin like orange jelly beans, but if they are tangerine or some other orange-like but not orange flavour, you will be made to do burpees.
