The DBA-Bears is a youth cycling development program aimed at youth from ages 7 all the way to 17! The Bears program develops children into cross-country mountain bikers, teaching the skills needed to ride anywhere, and have a good time doing it!

Why Register for the Bears?

  • Structured curriculum designed by professional cycling coaches
  • Low Student/Instructor Ratio means your child gets the feedback and instruction          they need
  • We teach the safety and skills necessary to ride safely on a variety of off-road trails
  • Enjoy an active, outdoors environment with like-minded people - Life long                    friendships!
  • Skills based group placement insures instructors can tailor each lesson the entire          group
  • We stress life-long love of the sport and encourage our program participants to            develop life-long habits of staying fit and active while enjoying the outdoors
  • All participants get a free cycling jersey - not a t-shirt, not a tech-t, a real deal            cycling jersey! With pockets...for SNACKS!

The DBA-Bears program is aimed at youth aged 7 to 17. Riders are split into different groups based on skill-level to insure each group gets a tailored teaching experience.

The only requirements for participants are:

  • Ability to ride without training wheels
  • A bicycle with gears and two working brakes
  • A gear exception for bikes that have a wheel-size of 18” or less as they can be difficult to find with gears. ALL bikes above this size NEED to have gears to ensure your child has the best experience possible with the club.

The DBA-Bears is a weekly youth cycling program developed by professional cycling coaches. Through various drills, teaching techniques and of course trail rides, we provide participants with the skills and techniques required to ride anywhere, and feel confident doing it!

The Bears takes place on Tuesday's from 6:30-8:00 pm through the months of May and June.

Intro day with bike checks and jersey sizing will announced Details to follow.

Equipment Requirements and Weather Policies

There is the potential that we will be riding in cold weather for the first few weeks of the program. As such, please be sure to pack warm gloves and a cold weather jacket.

It is highly recommended that DBA-Bears carry a small pack for all dates of the program, with a snack, water bottle (if there is no bottle cage on the bike), and spare clothes (jacket, etc).

All participants must have:
  • A mountain bike with gears and functional brakes (no singlespeed bikes, bmx's, etc)
  • A certified bike helmet
  • Cycling gloves
  • A backpack (with chest straps to keep pack secure while riding)
  • Water and snack
  • A cold/wet-weather jacket
  • A bike bell- It is law in Edmonton trails to be equipped with a  bike bell

A quick note on the bike:
We do not require a high-end mountain bike for this program. Almost any mountain bike is a great way to have some fun on the trails! However, we do require that any bike used in the program is in good condition, mechanically tuned and sound, as well as having mountain bike tires, two functioning brakes, and gears.

Please remember that a poorly-tuned bicycle impacts everyone in the group. Not only does the rider of the bike not have the opportunity to progress as a rider, but everyone else in the group receives less teaching time as the coach is forced to deal with mechanical issues instead of teaching.

If you're in doubt regarding the suitability of your childs bicycle, stop by our partner Shift Happens Bicycle Repair to get it checked out.

Weather Protocol:

As it is Spring in Alberta for our program, a wide range of weather conditions can be expected.

We are always in need of parent helpers and assistant coaches. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering!
